Tony's Final Cut

This is my version - we decided to have 2 different versions so that we could experience more of the processes ourselves rather than let someone else dominate.

Not entirely happy with this - it's quite entertaining but I think there are 2 many pieces of music - experimenting with Soundtrack - and not enough CUs or  variety of shot really.
But for 1 afternoon's filming and a morning's editing it worked quite well.

Animatic

This is our animatic - unfortunately we could shot standard digital pictures as we were running out of time and couldn't film and create an animatic in 1 afternoon - so went for the filming as a way forward and cos we could do it - this means the animatic is a set of stills from the clips we filmed.
It also means it works well as an editing script and was useful for that.

location shots - uploaded after filming but filmed before!

this is our first idea to use owen's park
Tony with his horse/bike

the chosen location

preparation for the filming

a different location - we chose not to use this as it was heavily utilised by pedestrians......

another option - again we chose not to use this. partly due to the rubbish bins

filming

We had a really super time filming, with moustaches slipping and sliding around, hats blowing off and members of the public clearly thinking we were a little strange. When you see the costume we used you will understand why.
The filming went well apart from a few drops of rain and the lack of a large ladder as high angle shots would have proved useful, specifically when filming the standoff in the alley way.  Some panning shots were difficult  due to traffic and angles.

Shot list

After a short break for a delicious lunch we planned the following shots and organised our filming in advance in order to best use our precious time.....
Lift shot of OWens Field to establish area, using Mickey  in his Baddie outfit
Pan from top
Close up of  removing key from pocket
removing bike
foot on bike with socks tucked in
Cycling with post office tower in shot
cu of wheels
low angle of wheels
 panning shot of cycling
shots of two cowboys on bikes
shot of bikes rearing up
cu of guns

we genuinely looked at these - 'onest Mary - - and they have directly influenced us

We watched several clips of Leone's work,  focusing on use of film language in order to emulate it in our work.

planning session 1

We  worked together to discuss the genres suggested and to  consider conventions of real media and how we could apply them with limited time, and resources.

Whilst we did consider working within the Rom-com genre with a western feel, we moved towards a western and developed the ideas of using bikes and an alley way for a standoff  as we didn't have easy access to horses, deserts, ghost towns, tumbleweed or large mountainous areas.

MIckey did consider visiting the joke shop for ten gallon hats and toy guns and hobby horses,  but restricted finances  led us to work within our budgets, using Boris bikes in free half hour sessions......We may however use the sound effects of horses to create that true Western feel/

We  scouted  the local area in order to find alley ways and other locations we could use and used the still camera to record our findings.

We are planning to use slow character revelation through long shots and ECU's having closely analysed several openings of Westerns, particularly the work of Leone.

Researching real media texts

Clips from Sergio Leone from youtube.
We noticed a strong sense of place created with slow pans, no characters in place.
Zooms used to  focus in on characters eyes..
Slow character movements with close ups on hands on guns. twitching fingers.... Lovely moustaches ( no time to grow them for today's filming)

We intend to use Boris bikes instead of  horses and brollies instead of  guns, with an urban rather than natural landscapes. We  have to substitute a sense of enclosure rather than space in order to work within the confines of Mise en scene available to us.

Openings of  Leone films - strong sense of place an time created through film language so we have clear conventions to follow - long shots, establishing pans, ECU

We have found it hard to locate the specific openings we are looking for on youtube, again more time to research would have proved useful
